Before You Begin

Make sure you have the following before you begin.

  1. One or more programs from the Troubleshooting Skills Series. There are three programs in this series:
    • Troubleshooting - Basic Techniques
    • Troubleshooting - Control Circuits
    • Troubleshooting - Motor Controls

    These programs are available as individual downloads or on CD ROM. Note: all three programs are contained on a single CD ROM.
  2. A license ID and Password for each program purchased. When you purchase any of the programs you will receive a License ID and Password for each program purchased. These are required to activate the full features of the program. You should have received them either by email or included in the package documents.
  3. If you have purchased fault packs you will have received a link to download each fault pack.
  4. A Troubleshooting Skills Program Binder (Only if you purchased the Shop or Industrial Edition. It is not available with the Personal Edition) This binder contains the Troubleshooting Program CD with all three troubleshooting programs, an Instructor Resource CD, and program documentation.
Notes:
  1. When the software is first installed it will operate in Demo mode.
  2. When activating the programs make sure you use the correct License ID assigned for that program. They are NOT Interchangeable.
  3. In order to run any of these programs on a Network you must purchase a Network License. The other licenses as well as the Demo will not run on a network.

Installation Guide for a Single Computer

I. Install the program(s)

Choose carefully a computer on which to install the software. Once the software has been installed and activated it cannot be moved to another computer without the assistance of Simutech Multimedia.

If the software was DOWNLOADED from the Simutech Multimedia Inc. website:

  1. Just double click the downloaded file to start the installation procedure, then follow the instructions displayed on your screen.

If you have a CD-ROM containing the software:

  1. Insert the PROGRAM CD-ROM into the CD Drive.
  2. If Autorun is enabled a startup screen will appear. If not, from the taskbar select Start, then Run. Type the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by :\autorun.exe (e.g., D:\autorun.exe)
  3. Click on the desired Program link to install.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
II. Activate the program(s)

Once a program is installed it will operate in demo mode. In order to use the full features of the program it must be activated. Please follow steps 1 to 8 below to complete the activation process.

  1. Have your License ID and password available.
  2. Be sure the program is installed on the computer that you wish to run the program from. Once it is activated, the program cannot be moved to another computer.
  3. Launch the program from the Start menu.
  4. Click the Start button on the program screen.
  5. Click the Activate button on the registration screen.
  6. Enter your LICENSE ID and PASSWORD and click the Next button.
  7. The program will attempt to activate over the Internet. If it fails to activate you will be given the following options:
    • Try Again. First make sure the computer is connected to the Internet and that the firewall is not blocking the program (you may have to temporarily disable the firewall while activating the program).
    • Activate By Browser to activate using any web browser. Use this option if the program does not activate automatically but you have access to the Internet either through this computer or another computer.
    • Activate Manually to activate via email, fax or phone. Use this option only if you cannot activate the program using either of the above options.
  8. Once the program is activated, a message will advise you that you were successful. Update your license details and click Continue to start using the program.
III. Install Fault Pack(s) if applicable

If you have purchased fault packs you will have received an email or other documentation containing a link to download each fault pack. Note that these fault packs can only be installed once each program is installed and activated. The following must be done for each fault pack you wish to install.

Option 1: If the computer where the programs are installed is connected to the Internet:

  1. Click the link to go to the download page for the fault.
  2. Click the Download Now button.
  3. Click the Run button and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

Option 2: If the computer where the programs are installed is NOT connected to the Internet:

  1. From a computer that is connected to the internet click the link to go to the download page for the fault.
  2. Click the Download Now button.
  3. Click the Save button and and choose a location on your hard drive.
  4. Copy the saved file to the computer with the troubleshooting programs installed.
  5. Doubleclick the file and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

Installation Guide for Networks

Notes:

  1. Only the Industrial Edition will operate on a network. Be sure you have purchased the Industrial Edition with the appropriate number of concurrent users.
  2. Installation and activation on the server must be done by a user with administrator privileges.
  3. The steps below must be completed, in the order shown, for each program you wish to install.
  4. Be sure to use the correct License ID and password for each program as they are not interchangeable.
I. Install the applicable program(s) on the SERVER

Choose a computer that will act as the server. This could be one of your normal servers or even a computer located in your lab.

  1. Insert the PROGRAM CD-ROM into the CD Drive of the server.
  2. If Autorun is enabled a startup screen will appear. If not, from the taskbar select Start, then Run. Type the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by :\autorun.exe (e.g., D:\autorun.exe)
  3. Click on the desired Program link to install. Note only install the program(s) that you have purchased and have a license ID for. (Basic Techniques, Control Circuits, and/or Motor Controls)
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
  5. Go to the directory where the program(s) were installed. Share this directory with read/execute permissions.
II. Activate the program(s) on the SERVER

Once a program is installed it will operate in demo mode. In order to use the full features of the program it must be activated. Please follow the steps below to activate the server.

  1. Have your License ID and password available.
  2. Be sure the program is installed on the computer that you wish to run the program from. Once it is activated, the program cannot be moved to another computer.
  3. Launch the program from the Start menu.
  4. Click the Start button on the program screen.
  5. Click the Activate button on the registration screen.
  6. Enter your LICENSE ID and PASSWORD and click the Next button.
  7. The program will attempt to activate over the Internet. If it fails to activate you will be given the following options:
    • Try Again. First make sure the computer is connected to the Internet and that the firewall is not blocking the program (you may have to temporarily disable the firewall while activating the program).
    • Activate By Browser to activate using any web browser. Use this option if the program does not activate automatically but you have access to the Internet either through this computer or another computer.

  8. Once the program is activated, a message will advise you that you were successful. Update your license details and click Continue.
  9. At this point the program attempts to create a network share required by the clients. You may be presented with a dialog requesting administrator privileges.
  10. The server has now been activated.
  11. Exit the program.
III. Setup the Clients

Follow the steps below to complete the activation and setup the network clients.

  1. Insert the INSTRUCTOR RESOURCE CD-ROM into the CD Drive of the client.
  2. If Autorun is enabled a startup screen will appear. If not, from the taskbar select Start, then Run. Type the letter of your CD-ROM drive followed by :\autorun.exe (e.g., D:\autorun.exe)
  3. Click on the Install - Runtime System link to install the runtime system. Note: Do not install any of the other programs.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
  5. Map the shared directory located on the server containing the program software (From Section I, step 5), to a public drive letter.
  6. Using the mapped drive from the previous step, create a shortcut to the program .exe file (TBT.exe or TCC.exe or TMC.exe) on the desktop or in the start menu.
  7. The first time you run a program through a client, you will need to complete the activation by following steps 4 to 8 from Section II above.
  8. Repeat steps 1 to 6 for each additional client.
Notes:
  • The runtime only needs to be installed once per client, even if you are using more then one program.
  • If you wish to use the programs on the server, you will also need to install the Runtime System on the server.

IV. Install Fault Pack(s) if applicable

If you wish, you can now install the optional fault packs which are included with in Industrial Edition. You will have received an email or other documentation containing a link to download each fault pack. Note that these fault packs can only be installed once each program is installed and activated. The following must be done for each fault pack you wish to install.

Option 1: If the computer where the programs are installed (SERVER) is connected to the Internet:

  1. Click the link to go to the fault pack download page.
  2. Click the Download Now button.
  3. Click the Run button and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

Option 2: If the computer where the programs are installed (SERVER) is NOT connected to the Internet:

  1. From a computer that is connected to the internet, click the link to go to the download page for the fault.
  2. Click the Download Now button.
  3. Click the Save button and and choose a location on your hard drive.
  4. Copy the saved file to the computer with the troubleshooting programs installed (SERVER).
  5. Double click the file and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
