Installation Guide for Networks
The Simutech Course Manager and Network Client are designed to work with the following troubleshooting software titles available from Simutech Multimedia:
- Troubleshooting Electrical Circuits
- Troubleshooting Control Circuits
- Troubleshooting Motor Circuits
- Troubleshooting Industrial Controls
Installation of the Enterprise Edition differs from the normal installation procedures for the troubleshooting software titles. This document provides instructions for installing the troubleshooting software titles, the Simutech Course Manager, and the Network Client.
Please refer to the Instructor Guide and Simutech Course Manager User Guide for guidelines on using the Simutech Course Manager and the Enterprise Edition of the troubleshooting software titles.
Notes:
- Only the Enterprise Edition will operate on a network. Be sure you have purchased the Enterprise Edition with the appropriate number of concurrent users.
- Installation and activation on the server must be done by a user with administrator privileges.
- The following steps must be completed, in the order shown.
- Once the software is activated, the program cannot be moved to another computer.
If the software was DOWNLOADED from the website:
- Just double click the downloaded file to start the installation procedure, then follow the instructions displayed on your screen.
If the software was PURCHASED ON CD:
- Insert the program CD of the title you wish to install into the CD drive.
- If Autorun is enabled a startup screen will appear. If not, from the taskbar select Start, then Run. Type the letter of your CD drive followed by :\autorun.exe (e.g., D:\autorun.exe).
- Click on the Install button and then follow the instructions displayed on your screen.
Note:
The installation process does two things:
- Installs the program files.
- Grants local read/write access to an "all users" Simutech specific directory for activation and user file access.
II. Share the program on the SERVER
The clients must be able to access the installed program across the network.
- Share the directory containing the program files for the installed program with read/execute permissions.
Note:
We recommend sharing at the level of the "Simutech" directory as this will provide access to all of the titles installed on the server.
III. Activate the program on the SERVER
In order to be able to use the troubleshooting software it must be activated. If you have not already done so, follow the steps below to complete the activation process.
- Have your License ID and Password available.
- On the computer where the program was installed, launch the program from the Start menu.
- Click the Start button on the program screen. An activation screen will appear.
- Enter your LICENSE ID and PASSWORD and click the Next button.
- The program will attempt to activate over the Internet. If it fails to activate you will be given the following options:
- Retry Automatic Activation. First make sure the computer is connected to the Internet and that the firewall is not blocking the program (you may have to temporarily disable the firewall while activating the program).
- Activate Online to activate using a web browser. Use this option if the program does not activate automatically but you have access to the Internet through this or another computer.
- Activate Manually to activate via email or phone. Use this option only if the above options were unsuccessful.
- Once activated, the program attempts to create a network share required by the clients (this is separate from the share you set up in Section II, step 1). You may be presented with a dialog requesting administrator privileges.
- Once the above is completed, a message will advise you that you were successful. Click Continue to start using the program. You may also be requested to update your registration information.
- You can now exit the program.
Note:
The server activation process does the following:
- Validates the License IDs with our activation server and determines the number of concurrent users to set up.
- Shares the above Simutech specific directory as the network share "SimutechData" with read/write permissions.
IV. Setup the Clients
